The global positioning system market continues to evolve and remains searing for portable GPS navigation devices with new products being launched by different brands.
Listed in the independent order high to low market share, here’s a quick review of the 5 most admired GPS brands:
Garmin:
Garmin is so far the best selling GPS navigator brand, with over 50% market share in global positioning systems. Garmin was incorporated in Schaffhausen, Switzerland and founded in the year 1989 with over 7,000 employees working for the company today.
The portable GPS navigation market remains a tough and competitive segment with new navigating products being introduced left right and center. Garmin GPS navigators have been consistently at the top with 5 star consumer ratings.
Magellan:
Magellan claims to be the first, to have developed the NAV 1000 handheld GPS receiver back in the year 1989. Based out of California, Magellan manufactures portable navigators for vehicles and hikers. It is also the key supplier for Hertz Car rentals with the NeverLost systems. Their latest GPS navigators have been quite impressive and have scored fighting fit in various agency tests along with consumer reviews.

Mio offers quite a variety of portable navigating units ranging from inexpensive to high end options, even though its product line is not as dominating as TomTom, Magellan or Garmin in the marketplace.
The world’s first ever Global Positioning System facilitated PDA was introduced in the year 2003 by Mio extending its reach to the devoted GPS market. However, their devices don’t really rank too high in the consumer ratings.
Nextar:
Nextar is relatively new company with only few years of expertise in the market of portable GPS devices. However the product sales are exceeding growth expectations since company had started marketing its devices as commodity. You will easily be able to find Nextar GPS devices at your local shopping store rather than at electronics or a gadget store since they are quite inexpensive. Even though most of the features are included in the low cost Nextar model, it just couldn’t compete well against high ranking GPS navigator brands.
